Local artist Abby Cocovini’s imagination was captured by the hustle and bustle of the daily goings on at Clapham Picturehouse – a cultural landmark and melting pot for a vibrant mix of characters, many regular visitors, plus an array of events and films that welcome groups from all walks of life. As a lifelong customer, and more recently a part-time employee, Abby is excited to share her unique point of view with the public from behind the scenes at what is ultimately much more than just a cinema. Her exhibition work is a mix of graphite, wax pastel and charcoal sketches.

Abby first embarked on this project after realising we all have skills that we can utilise to raise awareness for good causes, and she knew just the place she could make it happen…

‘Coming into the project I had no real plan, other than to draw, snoop around the cinema, draw, offer up the odd portrait here and there, and draw. Being allowed to poke around behind the scenes has given me an endless amount of interesting viewpoints that I’ve been eager to share with everyone. And so many portraits! Mainly for fellow staff members – who I found difficult to draw at first, putting myself under pressure to produce an image they would love. But what was good about all the portraits was all the practice that came with drawing them, and I’m now far more comfortable and confident when it comes to catching people’s likeness. Over the project my fondness for the cinema itself has grown exponentially, as well as all the people who use it and especially those who work there.’

Clapham Picturehouse is a cultural and community hub in South West London, recently having celebrated its 30th birthday, opening its doors for the first time in 1992. It has been host to wedding proposals, wakes, countless first dates, spectacular films and unforgettable Q&As, holding a special place in many people’s hearts.

Picturehouse first partnered with Refuge in 2019, a longstanding UK charity that supports women and children against domestic violence. Since then Picturehouse has raised over £114,000 for Refuge. Abby and the whole team are proud to be supporting Refuge through this ongoing partnership which will change the lives of many for years to come.

If you aspire to a future where domestic abuse is no longer tolerated or ignored stand with us in solidarity by donating online or in person at Clapham Picturehouse. Ask a member of staff for more information. 100% of all donations from Pictures In The House will go to Refuge.
