“Shoplifters” won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2018. It is a drama about a Japanese family of crooks who lift a lost little girl from the streets; a complex, subtle, mysterious film, another of the intricate and nuanced family dramas in the classical Japanese style, of which Kore-eda has made himself a modern master. Its significant plot shifts happen unobtrusively, almost invisibly and is ultimately eerily very moving.

The aim of the film club is to show a range of internationally successful films, past and recent, each of which reflects the film making culture of their country (or countries as cross national collaboration for funding is increasingly happening). The aim is to entertain, educate and, at times, confront our film viewing expectations and we show films from all over the world. The club is not for profit and new members are always very welcome.
