The Bread and Roses

“A gunshot. A sharp breath. A young woman, victim of a politically driven murder, tells her story about how she desperately tries to find her best friend, who is missing. Wherever she turns, whoever she asks, she hits a wall. So, she tries to get the answers the only way she knows: She writes. Letters. She raises her voice.
Live music, ancestry, murder, myth, the fight against the unacceptable, and contemporary Mexican politics.”

This show is a journey through different cultures to tell a story that repeats in different sides of the world: A young woman victim of a politically driven murder, and how she desperately tries to find her best friend, who is missing and no one seems to care due to their socio economic condition.

Accompanied with music, songs and poems in different languages, we get to know a girl that shares her love for her bizaana, her mother, and her grandmother with us as she fights on for justice. We hear their songs and experience their traditions and customs, which, although beautiful, are not always fair. But above all, we meet a person who fights for what matters, even if death is her price to pay.

This play is the result of a research process around forced disappearances, femicides and vulnerability in indigenous communities in Mexico. The main character has no name, as it is the representation of voices that were silenced after speaking up. This piece is a thank you for breaking the silence.

The play is performed in English and introduces Spanish, Zapotec and Taiwanese languages.
